Aditya Roy Kapur (born 16 November 1985) is an Indian film actor who works in Hindi films. After making his acting debut with the 2009 musical dramedy London Dreams, Kapur was praised for portraying an aspiring magician in the 2010 romantic drama Guzaarish. In 2013, he received wider success by featuring in the musical romantic film Aashiqui 2 and the romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, both of which were among the top-grossing productions of the year. The latter earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He followed it by starring in a series of films that did not perform well at the box office.
Early life and background
Kapur was born in Mumbai on 16 November 1985[1] to a Punjabi Hindu father,[2] Kumud Roy Kapur, and Salome Aaron, an Indian Jew. [3] His grandfather, Raghupat Roy Kapur, was a film producer.[4][5] Kapur is the youngest of the three siblings- his eldest brother, Siddharth Roy Kapur, was the Chief Executive Officer of UTV Motion Pictures and is married to the actress, Vidya Balan. His second elder brother, Kunaal Roy Kapur, is also an actor.[6]

His maternal grandparents, Sam and Ruby Aaron, were qualified dance teachers who introduced the Sama dance to India.[4] He did his schooling from G. D. Somani Memorial School, in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, where all his siblings studied and his mother directed school plays.[4] Subsequently, he graduated from St. Xavier's College, affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

Kapur is not a trained actor, though he has taken dance lessons and also diction classes to improve his Hindi accent. According to him he "had no burning ambition to become an actor," and was content being a VJ, until he was called to audition for London Dreams. During his school years, he wanted to be a cricketer but he quit cricket coaching classes after sixth standard.

Career
Film debut, initial struggle, and breakthrough (2009–2013)
Kapur started his career as a VJ on music channel Channel V India, where his comic timing and "unique style of hosting" made him a hit. He did a show "Pakao" for Channel V, and also hosted the hugely popular, 'India's hottest' show with VJ, Bruna Abdullah.[7]

In December 2008, Kapur was signed by director Vipul Amrutlal Shah to make his film debut with the musical comedy-drama London Dreams (2009). The film, co-starring Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Asin, saw Kapur play Wasim Khan, a Pakistani person. However, despite earning positive reviews from critics, London Dreams performed poorly at the box office with worldwide grossings of ?61 crore.

Kapur next reunited with Vipul Shah in the drama Action Replayy (2010), a science-fiction romantic comedy co-starring Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai, followed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali's romance Guzaarish (2010) starring Rai and Hrithik Roshan in lead roles. In both films, Kapur portrayed a supporting role. However, both films were commercially unsuccessful but Guzaarish received good reviews for its story.

After a three-year absence from full-screen, Kapur played a leading role in the musical romance Aashiqui 2 (2013), which marked his first of many collaborations with its director Mohit Suri and lead actress Shraddha Kapoor. A sequel to Aashiqui (1990), the film tells the love story of two singer. The film proved to be his first and a major commercial success, grossing a total of ?1.06 billion (US$16 million) worldwide.

Kapur's final appearance of 2013 was in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, a coming-of-age romantic comedy directed by Ayan Mukerji and co-starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Kalki Koechlin, in which he played the supporting part of a flirtatious guy. The film grossed ?2.95 billion (US$43 million) worldwide to emerge as Kapur's highest-grossing film release to that point, and alongside Aashiqui 2, it ranks among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. At the annual Filmfare Awards, Kapur received two nominations (one each) for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for his starring roles in Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani respectively.
